Two Thousand Nine

This year was intense. Some amazing experiences, some wonderful people, some inspiring places, a peppering of personal madness. Overall the year has been incredibly good for me with a lot of personal, creative and professional growth and evolution. 2010 is going to be even more intense with bigger aspirations and dreams to realize. I’m feeling focused and excited. Some highlights:

Looking Backward—

• In October I was blessed with an opportunity by Mary Anne Hobbs to create a 15 minute mini-mix for her BBC Radio 1 Experimental show. It was a huge thrill and honor for me, I’ve uploaded the mix to Soundcloud:

• Coincidentally, a few days before that aired I was a guest on a KUSF radio show called “Locals Only” where I did a mix featuring all San Francisco based producers. The archive can be found here, tracklisting here. It ended up coming out pretty cool, despite some dodgy mixes heheh.

• In September I did a DJ set at the Decibel Festival in Seattle. It was a really cool experience, a seriously big highlight of the year for me. Shouts to Miro, Sara, Victor, Moldy, Pinch, Mala, Mary Anne, Boxcutter, NType, Juakali, Katya, Monkeytek. Cheers to Big Up Magazine for catching some video:

• In July I spent a few weeks in Vancouver. It was one of the best experiences of my music travels to date. I love it there so much. Out to Michael Red, The Librarian and all the crew at Bass Coast Project, Lucy, Daega, Max Ulis, Taal Mala and all the Lighta boys, The Glitch Mob, Alex & Robyn, all the other people I met and became friends with. I miss you guys, seriously. Here’s some pictures:

• Dub War, April. Wow. Probably the best gig I’ve ever had as a dj. It was something I will never forget. It was a moving experience for me. Hard to sum up in words. Out to Dave, Joe, Alex, Jospehine, Juakali, Rando & Hijiri, Tommi Clouds, Kode9, Andrea and my dawg Drew FaltyDL. Some photos and video:

Test

• Montreal in April was amazing. Ended up making some really cool music with Matthew Komodo, the gig was sick despite my moodiness and self-doubting. BTW everything they say about the girls in Montreal is true. Out to Matthew, Nick and Maya. Some pixelz:

• Have to shout out this Joe Nice Mix from his Gourmet Beats radio show. Check the TL, check the rewind (!), and meditate on that Mala mix. Deep.

Looking Forward—

• I’m planning a trip to the UK in the new year, possibly in April. I’m planning on being there for about a month, see some friends, play some gigs, work on some projects. I’m really looking forward to it. Lot’s of other cool things happening in the new year, more collaborations, gigs, remixes, projects. I’ve also been working on some 170bpm stuff lately. More on that soon. Really excited by what I’m hearing a few circles of that sound.

• I’ve finally created accounts on Twitter and Youtube. I spent an entire day making bloody video clips of all my new and recent releases so be sure to check out my channel to scope them out.

• Speaking of new and forthcoming releases:

DJG “Pressure” / DJG & Headhunter “Spacecake” - Wheel & Deal 2010
DJG “Avoid The Noid” / “Duality” - Pushing Red 2010

Some shouts—

  • Out to Big Up Magazine for doing their thing for 1 year solid as of October. Much love to the whole family
  • Out to my friend Jus Wan who recently procured a blinding mix for the Hotflush podcast series. Do not miss it.
  • Out to one of my favorite people Comma, keep your eyes peeled for his new EP coming out in the new year on Semisexual Recordings.
  • Out to Joe Rogers and the Deeper gang for making me a resident at the new SF monthly featuring deep, bass-heavy, forward-thinking beats at the 222 every 1st Friday of the month. I played the first one a few weeks back and it was possibly the best time djing in SF I’ve had all year.
  • Out to my French brethren F and my homeboy Headhunter for the first release of Transistor Recordings. Also keep your eyes peeled for F’s new album on 7even Recordings in 2010. It’s going to be badboy.
  • Out to XI working on new material and new styles under a new name, ULTRAGAMMA.
  • Out to Alex Incyde, check out the new tunes on his Soundcloud and keep an eye on this guy in 2010.
  • Out to Daega Sound System in Vancouver. Get to know these guys if you don’t already because they’re making waves in 2010.
  • Out to Miro, Victor, Sara and all the Surefire Agency man dem holding it down.  http://www.surefireagency.com/
  • Out to my heroes Eskmo and EPROM and congrats on their forthcoming release on WARP in 2010. Massive!
  • Last but not least out to my boy Drew FaltyDL for maintaining an entirely tolerable twitter feed, and for releasing a brand new killer EP on Mu.

Mad love to all my friends around the world.
